The civil war between Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla was caused by a feud between the two powerful generals. Sulla was supposed to continue advancing and rising in power, but Marius ended up winning command of the Roman legions. Sulla ordered his forces to march on Rome, no general had ever entered the city wanting to declare war. Sulla managed to defeat Marius’ army and Marius fled to Africa. However, Sulla didn’t stop there, he even executed King Mithridates, the ruler who enabled Marius to rule over the legions. This plunged Rome into utter chaos. Marius had to come out of hiding and rule over Rome as dictator until his death. Sulla marched on Rome again, removing Marius’ son from rule and named himself tyrant. Sulla voluntarily retired a few years later, but his short term had weakened Rome.
